Teriyaki Shrimp over Rice Noodles - the sauce is made with lime juice, garlic, honey, sesame oil, and red chili paste. Easy and flavorful sauce. Shrimp tastes amazing with teriyaki sauce and looks beautiful sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds!
Shrimp cooked in teriyaki sauce is a very easy dish to prepare, perfect for someone like me who works full-time and doesn't have time or energy to engage in lengthy and complicated recipes at the end of the workday.
How to dress up bottled teriyaki sauce
This recipe uses a bottled teriyaki sauce, which I dressed up quite a bit with quite a few simple additions (available in most pantries), such as lime juice, honey, garlic, just a touch of sesame oil (for flavor), and red chili sauce for spiciness. Adding these few simple ingredients to a bottled sauce makes it richer, more flavorful, and tasting like it's home-made.
Adding freshly toasted sesame seeds makes the sauce even more delicious, although you can skip this step (or not) if your bottled sauce already has sesame seeds in it.
Notes about properly cooking shrimp
- The important thing in this recipe is to not over-cook the shrimp.
- It doesn't take much time at all to cook the shrimp - only a couple of minutes per side in a well pre-heated skillet. Make sure to watch closely your cooking times.
- Overcooking can happen very fast which will result in tough and rubbery-like tasting shrimp effectively ruining the dish.
- This recipe lists very short times for sautéing the shrimp in the skillet and then cooking it just a little bit more in the sauce.
How to thicken teriyaki sauce
- If the teriyaki sauce is too thin, use the optional step of mixing 1 teaspoon of cornstarch in 1 tablespoon of hot water and then adding it to the boiling sauce just for a minute, to thicken.
- Do not try to reduce the teriyaki sauce by boiling it down for over a minute or two (along with the shrimp in the skillet) because 1) shrimp will toughen up and become rubber-like; 2) the sauce is too good to be reduced. Just use the cornstarch to thicken it.

Teriyaki Shrimp over Rice Noodles
Ingredients
Teriyaki Sauce:
- ยพ cup Teriyaki sauce (use gluten free sauce for gluten free version)
- 2 tablespoons lime juice or lemon juice
- 5 cloves garlic , minced
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon red curry paste
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds , toasted
Shrimp:
Rice Noodles:
- 8 oz rice noodles (gluten free)
OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS:
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon hot water
Instructions
How to make teriyaki sauce:
- Combine teriyaki sauce, lime (or lemon) juice, minced garlic, honey, sesame oil, and red curry paste in a bowl. Stir to combine. You might want to warm honey in a microwave before adding to the sauce to make it softer.
Marinate shrimp:
- Place shrimp in a large ziploc plastic bag.
- Add half of the teriyaki mixture to the bag and secure the top of the bag. Toss shrimp in the bag to make sure all shrimp is coated with the sauce.
- Marinate for about 15 minutes, no longer.
Cook shrimp:
- Heat vegetable or olive oil in a large skillet over high heat, add shrimp from the plastic bag (but without the sauce) and cook for 2 minutes, turning once (about 1 minute per side).
- Add the sauce from the bag and from the bowl into the skillet and continue cooking the shrimp on high heat for 1-2 minutes until the sauce boils and thickens a bit.
- OPTIONAL. If you want a thicker sauce, at this point dissolve 1 teaspoon of cornstarch in about 1 tablespoon of water. Add this mixture to the boiling sauce in the skillet and stir well while boiling - the skillet sauce should thicken as a result.
- Do not let the sauce boil for more than about a minute or you will overcook the shrimp.
- Mix in toasted sesame seeds into the teriyaki sauce right before you're ready to serve.
Cook rice noodles:
- Cook rice noodles according to package instructions.
Serve:
- At this point, you can add rice noodles to the teriyaki sauce in the skillet and stir fry shrimp and the noodles/rice all together in the sauce. And serve just like that.
- Or, you can just use plain cooked rice noodles as a bed for teriyaki shrimp and the sauce. Make a bed of the rice noodles (or rice) in individual serving plates. Spoon shrimp and the sauce on top.
