Garlic Shrimp and Sun-Dried Tomatoes with Pasta in Spicy Creamy Sauce – fettuccine in a homemade Alfredo sauce, spiced up with basil and crushed red pepper. Italian comfort food that’s super easy to make!

You start by cooking sun-dried tomatoes with minced garlic in 2 tablespoons of olive oil, then add shrimp, half and half, and spices:

Add cooked pasta and mix everything in:

Adjust spices by adding more of basil, crushed red pepper, and salt:

Garlic Shrimp and Sun-Dried Tomatoes with Pasta in Spicy Creamy Sauce

  • half a pound of shrimp (90 count of small shrimp in 1 pound). Use unfrozen uncooked shrimp. If you have to, you can use unfrozen cooked shrimp - it will work here too.
  • 4 oz sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil
  • salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup half and half (or milk)
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ΒΌ teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
  • 8 oz fettuccine pasta (use gluten free brown rice fettuccine for gluten free version)


  1. Note: if using sun-dried tomatoes in oil (in a jar), make sure to drain sun-dried tomatoes from oil, before using them. Reserve 2 tablespoons of this drained oil for sauteing as described below:
  2. In a large skillet, saute minced garlic and sun-dried tomatoes (drained from oil) in 2 tablespoons of oil (reserved from the sun-dried tomatoes jar - see note above) for 1 minute until garlic is fragrant.
  3. Add shrimp, sprinkle with a small amount of salt, paprika, and cook on medium heat for about 2 more minutes.
  4. Add half and half, basil, and crushed red pepper to the skillet with shrimp, bring to boil and reduce to simmer. Whisk the Parmesan cheese into the hot cream and stir to melt cheese, on lowest heat setting, until cheese is melted. Remove the sauce from heat. Add more salt, basil and more crushed red pepper if desired, to taste.
  5. In the mean time, cook pasta according to package instructions. Drain (reserving some pasta water). Add cooked pasta to the creamy mixture, add more salt, basil and more crushed red pepper if desired, to taste.

      Hi Tammy, anytime I make pasta I keep some pasta water to thin out the sauce should it get too thick while simmering.

    Hi I stumbled on this recipe by accident and decided to try it for supper! I loved it but instead of using half and half I used regular milk. Also I used pre-shredded parm cheese and it didn’t really become creamy. All the cheese stuck to the shrimp and almost became hard /:

      I made this tonight and love the flavor! The consistency of mine looks nothing like your pictures though. Mine is very thick and sticky. What did I do wrong? I followed the directions and amounts to a T, but mine is more the consistency of gooey mac and cheese. Would love to make it again if I can make it like your picture!

      Half-and-half is a mixture of milk and cream. It is sold in most grocery stores. Very easy to find. Hope this helps!

    I wish Scallions (obviously in the pictures) were in the ingredient list as well as the pasta water instructions.. Im sure its to thin the sauce, but in my first attempt here thinning was unnecessary. Flavor was terrific, for additions one commenter said broccoli and I think that would be dynamite.. I’d cook it first then add at end but I’ll do that next time as well as add scallions. I think you can’t overseas this… More basil would be nice as well as paprika to get the color of the sauce in your photos closer to actual “real life”. But the taste and ease is just great. If the cost of a jar of these tomatoes scares you remember you can basically make four dishes out of it. My house smells amazing and this dish is really delicious. (for the commenter that said their cheese curdled, make sure you have the heat on the barest level and add cheese 1 oz. at a time and really whisk it before adding any more… my dish turned out great). Looking forward to trying more of your pasta dishes!

    Made this for dinner last night it was awesome! I used large deveined shrimp with the tails on, used heavy whip cream instead of half n half and I added sautΓ©ed mushrooms after adding the heavy whip cream. My husbands comments were ” I think this is the best dish you’ve ever made, I think we should have this every week!”

    I made this for dinner tonight. Like a previous commenter said, my cheese did not blend into the sauce at all, it was just very clumpy. It was freshly shredded. Despite that, this was a super yummy dinner that I will definitely try making again.

      If you get clumps in the sauce, make sure to bring the sauce to boil and keep stirring until the cheese melts into a creamy sauce. Add more liquid if needed. If you cook and stir the sauce while boiling long enough (even with the pasta in it) – all the cheese will melt.

    I’ll be honest, we did not go on point to the exact recipe. We didn’t have fettuccine so used linguine. We could have used sun dried tomatoes, but I noticed our grape tomatoes were looking a like they could wilt so my husband sauteed them instead. I also tossed in some seasoned chicken from a salad I had not finished the day before so we cut the shrimp back and added that. My husband and I use spices without measuring. I think we added extra paprika. The sauce was great and since it’s just us two, we did reduce the portions. All in all, a great mid-week meal!

    This was terrible.
    Cheese clumped around the shrimp and never became creamy.
    What a waste of shrimp and fresh Parmesan.

      Make sure your pan and the liquids are hot enough before adding cheese. Once the cheese is added, keep stirring on low-medium simmer until the cheese is melted, and the sauce is creamy. Increase the heat, if you have to. A lot of time the sauce doesn’t get creamy because your pan is not hot enough or sauce liquids are not hot enough. Hope that helps.

    Thank you for such a great recipe! The family loved it and said it was a keeper recipe! I added two spoonfuls of cream cheese to the sauce only because I had to use skim milk and it was lacking that creamy factor. Looking forward to leftovers providing it’s not eaten tonight as a snack

    I am disappointed in this recipe. Following the steps exactly, the cheese clumped up on me and clung to the shrimp. The sauce was a runny mess instead of nice creamyness.

    Yummity yum yum yummers! Used milk and added a tablespoon of cornstarch to thicken the sauce. Extra red pepper. And parmesan never ever melts for me, so next time it goes on top! Thank you for sharing this forever ago!

    I made this recipe tonight and it was amazing! wonderful flavor and so easy, I did not have any trouble with the cheese I whisked it in a little at a time and it melted easily. I used heavy cream instead of half and half and it thickened nicely, I did have to use some pasta water to keep it from getting too thick but it was a delicious recipe!

    Made this today & it was amazing and doubled the recipe. Only difference I made was I used half a cup of half/half and half a cup of heavy whipping cream.     I absolutely can’t wait to cook this tonight. I originally had another recipe from google, but I came across this photo and said to myself that I have to make this instead! I even had to go back to the store to grab these (your) ingredients. I’m so excited & alittle worried. I’d already bought heavy whipp for the previous recipe, will it be okay to sub heavy whipp instead of half/half or milk. Help!?!?!

      Yes, you can use heavy whipping cream instead of half and half or milk, just halve the amount of Parmesan cheese. Use 1/2 cup of freshly shredded Parmesan cheese instead of 1 cup if you use 1 cup of heavy cream, otherwise your sauce will be too thick.
