Once upon a time, the pumpkin pie got infested with little chocolate bugs, spiders, and worms. Some of these creatures have eyes and are staring right back at you from the tart.  But, thankfully, there are three magic wizard hats (with cinnamon apple filling) to save the harvest.  It’s a battle: the bugs have managed to cover one of the pumpkin tarts with the spider web; the apple and the pear each got mummified and terrified. The bugs are trying to penetrate the crust stuffed with cinnamon apple and cranberries.   Even pecans and cranberries are crawling around. Continue reading

Plum and apple tart on puff pastry

This is that puff pastry dessert I was talking about earlier this week, when I got carried away baking puff pastry goodies for Weekend Cook and Tell Event at SeriousEats.com. Just like anything with puff pastry, this recipe is very easy: just peel, slice, assemble and bake. Plum and apple tart that you see on these photos is a very light and fluffy dessert concoction. Tart cherry pie – good memories

This is just a simple pie, but there are a lot of memories attached to it.  When my twin sister and I were little, we would spend every summer vacation at our grandparents’ house, away from the city noise.  The house had a wonderful garden with lots of fruit trees: apples, cherries, and many kinds of grapes.  In fact, we had more varieties of grapes in our garden alone than what is usually offered in a typical grocery store.   But more relevant to my story, we had 3 gorgeous sour cherry trees that gave a generous harvest every year.  We would always spend a couple of weeks pitting huge amounts of cherries (unbelievable how much fruit 3 trees would produce), and then our parents would make many cans of homemade cherry jelly and tart cherry preserves.
